The cork recycling project in Asturias now has a name: Recorchu
The generation of waste grows day by day in our society, the need to reduce its production, as well as to convert it into resources after its useful life, requires adequate awareness among citizens about the importance of reducing waste generation ( reduce and reuse) and their recycling in accordance with the European Union Action Plan for Circular Economy, the Strategic Waste Plan of the Principality of Asturias and the circular economy strategies of Spain and Asturias.
Faced with the challenge of recycling cider cork, an “orphan” waste, the PDO Sidra de Asturias, Cetemas and the Vertidos Cero Association have launched the “Recorchu” project with the aim of analyzing the viability of collecting the cork. cider corks in the cider presses and their transformation into other objects; raising awareness of the benefits of its collection and evaluating its potential uses.
The first step has been the creation of an informative video focused on Reduce, Reuse and Recycle waste derived from the activity of the cider sector as an example of a circular economy.
Its presentation within the framework of FIDMA 2022 has been accompanied by the voluntary collection of corks generated during the development of the Fair to avoid their deposit in landfill, with its consequent savings in CO2 emissions. The pilot test was carried out with two cider houses in which more than 20 kilos of cork stoppers were collected. We appreciate the collaboration of citizens and volunteers who actively participated in depositing the corks in the containers enabled for their collection. The next action will take place at the Gijón de Sidra de Asturias® conference, from October 13 to 23, in which it is expected to value more than 100,000 corks thanks to the collaboration of 35 cider houses.* RECORCHU is a project subsidized by the Department of Autonomous Administration, Environment and Climate Change of the Principality of Asturias
